They're Up
Okay, so they've been announced. It's what we expected, with a few twists, but the Golden Globes and the SAG awards gave us a pretty good preview of what this would be.
Go see the full list here: Oscar Nominations
New film to the list: Munich
New actor: William Hurt (for that philly accent!)
So disappointing (and I knew this would happen): Charlize Theron, Keira Knightley, and the feel-good Judi Dench nomination (okay, I haven't seen the movie, and I think she's awesome, but where is Maria Bello?)
What do you think? Let's talk, people!

I didn't expect 'Crash' to get so much recognition. Along the same lines, it's nice to see Terrance Howard getting the nomination for Hustle & Flow - am I the only one who wasn't expecting that? Unfortunately, that category is a two man race, and he's not one of the two.
Well, as usual, the nominations give us plenty to react to. As always, the men are looking much stronger than the women. Why is it that so many of the women nominees come from films that are otherwise unnominated? Shouldn't this be telling us something about the quality of the roles for women in "major films?" UGH.
That being said, I don't really feel qualified to talk about the women since I haven't seen most of the performances. The men are looking good, but where is Ralph? He had a huge year with THE CONSTANT GARDENER, WHITE COUNTESS, and W&G, but he's totally dissed. Very sad.
Since Dort has paved the way with her true confession of gay love of Heath, let me take this opportunity to confess my gay love of Jake Gyllenhaal. (You heard it here first, hubby!) I am glad to see him nominated.
Lastly, as is frequently the case, it's a virtual BLACK OUT, save Terrence Howard. At least CRASH was nominated, which I guess counts for something.
HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and THE SQUID AND THE WHALE also got pretty much shafted. A shame on both counts.
And of course, BRAVO for George. I hope he walks away with at least one statue.
So when do we start laying odds?
I enjoyed watching P&P, but I did not find it captured the story or dialogue as well as, say, the SENSE and SENSIBILITY screen version did at all. (And I am totally biased, I love the BBC version of P&P.)
That said, I did not find Keira that compelling of an Elizabeth - not compelling enough for an oscar nod at all. And that collagen-injected mouth/fang teeth are a bit distracting. I know that's bitchy, but I cannot help myself.
Emily, I totally agree with your assessment of the films nominated versus actresses nominated. Why no overlaps? grr.
I only have gay love for George Michael, and that's old news.
Salon kinda hated Crash. According to Metacritic, Crash got 50's from Salon, Slate, Newsweek and NYTimes. There's some big nationals right there who didn't love it. Overall rating is a 69 (generally favorable), with gushing reviews from The New Yorker and EW.

I actually really liked CRASH a lot, but I know of a few dissenters. Is it that we are all a bit tired of the circular, overlapping plot? Are these critics too cynical?
Who knows. I liked CRASH because there was no hero, no single good person. Perhaps every character was a bit extreme, but all had good and bad characteristics.(And don't worry, that's not a spoiler)
