Let's Hear it for the Ladies Open Thread
I think we are all familiar with the myth (perhaps true?) that Hollywood is controlled by men who have no time for women actors once they hit 30 and the lines start showing and the boobs start sagging. I have been thinking about this myth/fact lately as we have all been reviewing our favorite pictures from 2005. It's always so easy to think of dozens of amazing performances by men, but where are the earth-shattering, soul-crushing roles for women?
So let me take this opportunity to give a little shout out for the long-lost Judy Davis, one of the most versatile - and frequently unhinged - actresses out there. We saw portions of her wonderful work in "Impromptu" (with Mandy P., Kate!) over the weekend, and a snippet of some bizarre looking Lifetime movie (a shame, I know) last night, and they both reminded me what a force of nature she is. I just wish we were seeing more of her lately.
So let's hear it, people: who are your favorite women in Hollywood??

Love Judy Davis. And yes, I have seen Impromptu with a younger, thinner Mandy P.
Here, here, for Emily starting this thread. Where do they all go? after the romantic comedy leads/roles for younger women, all of these great actresses disappear until they re-emerge as grandmothers or character actors. It's so depressing. It's like women don't have lives between the ages of 37-55.
Dorothy - Kate Winslet is probably my favorite "younger" actress - I AM IN LOVE WITH HER. she is excellent in everything she does. See Heavenly Creatures to see where it all began.
Totally agree with assessment of Reese. I think she actually has a fairly wide range - election, walk the line, and the eternally funny legally blond.
Phew! It's such a treat to come back to the office after an exhausting day in court and check in with this banter. It's sooooo soothing.
Must give a shout out for FRANCES McDORMAND. We saw a cameo from her in "Miller's Crossing" last night. She is always brilliant (and hot!), even in lukewarm stuff like "Laurel Canyon."
It's nice hearing about everyone's favorite women.
Yes, yes for Kate W. "Heavenly Creatures" (an early Peter Jackson film) is downright creepy.
While I'm at it, I still love Emma Thompson. even though she is a bit low-profile these days.
Kate, you are SO RIGHT about the blackhole that women fall into once they get over 30. It's really a sin.
Hmmm...What are we talking about?
I guess when I started this post, I was mostly thinking about women in that 30-55 "wasteland" who have a hard time finding great roles (since they are too old to play hookers and too young to be grandmothers.)
I have never seen Rachel McAdams in anything, at least not as far as I know. Where will I find her?
Yes, Emma was fabulous in LOVE ACTUALLY (a rather silly film, but she brought the GRAVITAS, as she always does.)
I agree that Scarlett is WAY over-rated. She totally did not deserve a GG nomination for MATCH POINT.
It annoys me when women get nominated just for being sexy.
joan allen is cool. and i'm a big fan of all those british actresses who generally give great performances - emily watson, imelda staunton - and i do really admire cate blanchett, an aussie (despite loathing the aviator).
where oh where, though, are those women in their 40s? some are on wysteria lane, but they are all botoxed beyond recognition.
I have been thinking a lot lately (and getting freaked out) about how much YOUNGER the women keep getting. the obsession with scarlett, lindsay lohan, etc. rachel mcadams is a bit refreshing, as she's actually over 25 - almost 30, i think. but come ON. seeing scarlett on charlie rose talking about being an "ACT-ress" (note emphasis) two years ago made me gag.
