The Balcony is Closed
We have been sharing views and attitudes about CINEMA since about age 8. We've come along way from the Wayne Art Center, where we critiqued the cinematic merits of Charles and Diana's wedding. (Well, Kate provided the critique; Emily just continued working with her cray-pas.) But one thing has remained the same over all these years: we love film, and, perhaps more importantly, we love talking about it. So get the popcorn ready, and feel free to join our conversation.

Thanks, Kate - GA is dreamy. So burdened, yet so elegant. Ahhhh.
She looks GORGEOUS, man. Who ever knew that being morose could be so sexy!!
Can't wait for Sunday night.
P.S.
What's happening to me?? I am looking forwar to watching all of this...television?!?! (GASP)
Okay, so...it seems like lady D is perhaps esther's mother by nemo. And you are right, John J. is totally in love with esther. Do we think he had anything to do with woodcourt's departure due to debt? hmm.
how about that chilling death rattle out of gridley at the end? eek. didn't get enough of skimpole last night, but lots was revealed as we followed guppy around.
New characters: Bucket (familiar face), S. George, Charley Neckett, the Chadbands.
Snagsby put in a good show, and Tulkinghorn is still up to no good.
and what about hortense ripping off her shoes before walking back to the dedlock house? she's a nut.
Inspector Bucket gets the prize for best new name. Dickens must have had some premium opium. How else could he come up with this shit??
Hortence is scary, man. She's wacked! Looks like she is going to be a pawn for Tulkinghorn as he continues to mess with Lady D.
I need to look at the summary of last night's episode to be reminded about the Chadbands...
Chadbands are the reverend and his wife who were having tea with Snagsby when the police came, and Guppy ended up having tea with them. She revealed that she knew Esther as a girl.
another good name: Smallweed. and how about him asking people to lift him up and shake out his bones? his teeth are super nasty.
Smallweed is GREAT in both name and character. I do have a question for the assembled: Was Bucket being symathetic to Gridley before his dramatic demise? My instinct says Bucket is ALL bad, but I don't know...
As far as Lady Dedlock mothering Esther by Nemo, well, it seems quite clear (with 5 hours to go!) that is the case - but I'm still hopin for more twists and turns. Like, how is she going to get rid of that horrendous husband?
Never fear, I think Dickens has a ways to go with this story, and just when you think it's all over...the plot changes, AGAIN.
I'm wondering if it's too simple that esther is the daughter.
Bucket wasn't being sympathetic prior to the death rattle. I agree with you, Mike, that this was a sudden twist- but perhaps he's just a pawn of Tulkinghorn. I thought he was all bad, but I am not as convinced anymore. Clamb, however, IS all bad.
And if she gets rid of Sir Leicester, where does she go? Nemo is no longer around...and Hortense sure isn't going to help her out.
Another question: what made her get rid of Hortense? She has a remarkable interest in pretty young women (as in, I think she's an aging pretty woman, so she's a bit fascinated/jealous of her younger counterparts). Anyone else notice that? First she gets a new lady's maid, and then she remarks on how pretty Ada is.
