I know you've been waiting...
So here it is! Episode 2-14 could have been so much better, and you don't know how it pains me to tell you that. Yes, that's the incredible Bill Duke putting the hurt on Lee right there. And the ingredients were SO there to really show how's Lee's been slipping since his "space walk", but this one just doesn't deliver. The fate of Duke's character is clumsily handled; he doesn't get enough screen time to fully shine.
Emily felt like Lee's memory of some romance before the holocaust was a bit clunky as a story device. I completely agree. Yes, he's been through a traumatic experience, but we've never seen any evidence (in over a season and a half) that the memory of this lost love is something he carries with him. It seemed to come out of nowhere.
But, as always, there were good points. Mary McDonnell shows why she's been nominated for two Oscars. Her scene with Baltar where the two square off over his role in the government is delicious. And while I thought the status of her illness in the previous episode was resolved a little too neatly, her current cantankerous-ness shows she still going through something, and I can't wait to see what's next!

Okay, I tuned in and I am so disappointed that I seem to have tuned into a less than great episode (according to you). I seem to have caught the soapier of the episodes. But never fear, I will tune in again.
I found that things did move so swiftly that it was a bit much at times - esp. the preview of ms. president from the week before on the table and then on friday, they just dismissed it when referencing how much she missed during her illness. Plus, do people get killed that quickly? i assume there had been some buildup to the killings on friday.
And it took me about 1/3 of the show to remember where I've seen the VP. He was Tom in Bridget Jones - a VERY different character. Hilarious, in fact.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I am intrigued and very possibly on the way to being hooked.
Thanks, Mike, for talking about this!
Welcome to the wide world of BSG, Kate. I am very impressed with you jumping in feet first. The show can be a bit dizzying even if you have been watching it from the beginning.
Sadly, it wasn't the best episode - usually the conflict is a little more artfully done, and not so reliant on cheezy devices like flashbacks, etc. And no, people don't usually get killed so quickly. The business with Lee and the prostitute was pretty lame, though of course I loved that the episode focused on him. (FYI, two episodes ago Lee's fighter was blown up and he got jettisoned into outerspace and nearly died, as the oxygen leaked from his space suit. Needless to say he survived (not entirely sure how) but he seems to be dealing with some PTSD now, hence Friday's episode.)
Looks like next week we are in for some drama based more on the inter-relationships of the Gallactica crew, which is always the best stuff. Here they are, the last human being in the entire universe, struggling to survive. Makes for some seriously intense stuff. If you hang in there, you will be richly rewarded.
Baltar (the VP) is a fabulous character, and the actor does great a job with him. He does great work dealing with his hallucinatory leggy blond friend (no one else can see her.) I am glad you know him from somewhere else. (I can't recall him from BJD.)
Anyway, let us know if you have questions about what the hell is going on. I think you'll find it pretty satisfying TV.
Good to know. I am totally fascinated by the premise of only 40K + people left alive as they search for a home and fight to survive. it just happens to take place in outerspace. i can dig it.
Baltar was Tom, Bridget's gay male friend who was a pop star in the '80s and who thought with Hugh Grant's character was a dish. His hair was way shorter.
Just realized i will be miss it next friday. Is it ever repeated???
Check your local listings, but I think they re-run it on Monday nights, late. Can you tape it??
I vaguely remember James Callis in BJD now...been awhile since I've seen that movie...
